Job Requirements/Description

The University of Greater Manchester is seeking a highly motivated and organised Psychology Lab Specialist Cover to join our School of Psychology. This role is essential in supporting teaching, research, and innovation across our cognitive, behavioural, and neuropsychology laboratories.

Working closely with academic staff, researchers, and students, you will ensure the smooth running of laboratory spaces, maintain specialist equipment, support experimental setups, and promote best practices in data collection, safety, and ethics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes, research projects, and experimental sessions.
  • Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including EEG, eye-tracking, psychophysiology systems, and computer-based experimental software. 
  • Support researchers in the design, piloting, and delivery of experiments.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, calibrate equipment, and coordinate repairs or servicing when necessary.
  • Ensure laboratories meet health, safety, and ethical compliance standards, including preparation of risk assessments.
  • Provide training and guidance to students and staff on equipment use and data collection procedures.
  • Assist with data management processes, including secure storage and organisation of datasets.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of lab procedures and systems.

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Practical experience with psychological research methods and lab equipment.
  • Strong technical skills, particularly in experimental software and data collection tools.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of health & safety and research governance requirements.
